Worked from Shani's own transit against the Lahiri zodiac: Kumbh from 17 January 2023, Meen from 29 March 2025, Mesh from 3 June 2027. Dates are the day Shani first enters each rashi, in IST. He also turns retrograde and steps back into the rashi behind him for some months at times, so a panchang can show a different date for those months. Next steps back: back in Meen from 20 October 2027 to 23 February 2028; back in Mesh from 5 October 2029 to 17 April 2030. Kumbh was first entered on 29 April 2022, with a step back into Makar from 12 July 2022 to 17 January 2023.
WHAT IT IS
Seven and a half years, three transits, counted from the Moon
What Sade Sati is
Shani takes about two and a half years to cross one rashi. Sade Sati is the stretch when he crosses three in a row: the twelfth from your Janma Rashi, then your Janma Rashi itself, then the second. Three transits of two and a half years each is seven and a half years, and that is the name: sade sati, seven and a half.
The three phases
Rising, while Shani is in the twelfth. Peak, while he sits on your own rashi. Setting, while he is in the second and on his way out. Each phase is one transit, about two and a half years. The tradition counts the peak as the heart of the period, because that is when Shani stands on the Moon itself.
What Shani dhaiya is
Dhaiya is the shorter one: two and a half years, one transit, not three. It runs when Shani is in the fourth from your Janma Rashi (kantaka shani) or in the eighth (ashtama shani). Two rashis are always in dhaiya, and they are never the same three that are in Sade Sati. The Shani Ritual is kept for both.
Moon sign, not sun sign
Sade Sati is counted from the Janma Rashi, the rashi the Moon stood in at your birth. It is not counted from the sun sign the newspapers print, and the two agree for only about one person in twelve. If you do not know your Janma Rashi, the date of birth tab on this page works out your Moon sign for you.
ASKED OFTEN
Sade Sati, in short
Am I in Sade Sati right now?
Pick your Janma Rashi at the top of this page and it answers in one line. Sade Sati is running if Shani is standing in the twelfth, the first or the second from your Janma Rashi. The checker reads Shani's position on the day you open it, so the answer is current every time.
How long does Sade Sati last?
Seven and a half years from the day Shani enters the twelfth from your Janma Rashi. Three transits of about two and a half years each. The checker prints the day your current phase ends and the day the whole period ends.
Is Sade Sati counted from my sun sign?
No. It is counted from the Janma Rashi, the rashi the Moon stood in at your birth. The sun sign printed in newspapers is a different reading, and the two land on the same rashi for only about one person in twelve. If you do not know your Janma Rashi, the date of birth tab works out your Moon sign from your date, and from your birth time if you add it.
What is the difference between Sade Sati and Shani dhaiya?
Length and position. Sade Sati is three transits, seven and a half years, with Shani crossing the twelfth, the first and the second from your Janma Rashi. Dhaiya is one transit, two and a half years, with Shani in the fourth (kantaka shani) or in the eighth (ashtama shani). Two rashis are in dhaiya at any time, and three are in Sade Sati.
Which of the three phases is the heaviest?
The tradition counts the peak, the middle two and a half years, when Shani stands on the Janma Rashi itself. The rising phase runs before it, with Shani in the twelfth. The setting phase runs after it, with Shani in the second.
What does the Shani Ritual have to do with this?
It is the practice kept through Sade Sati and through dhaiya: karungali on the right hand, the Hanuman Chalisa on Saturdays, forty days and six Saturdays. If the checker says neither is running for you, it is not your Ritual, and it says so.
As tradition records it
Sade Sati and dhaiya are classical transit periods, counted from the Janma Rashi and kept by generations. This page reads the transit and tells you where you stand in it. It is not personal advice, and it is not health, money or legal advice.
