Shiv Chalisa: when and how to read it, and keeping it in the mandir
When to read the Shiv Chalisa, how to read it, and how a wooden Shiv Chalisa is kept in the home mandir.
The short answer
The Shiv Chalisa is read on Monday, Mahadev's day, and daily by those who keep the practice, usually after the morning bath. It is forty verses read straight through, aloud or in a low voice. A wooden copy is kept in the mandir on a clean cloth near the Shivling or Shiv parivar, above floor level, with nothing placed on top of it.

When should the Shiv Chalisa be read?
Monday is Shiva's day, and it is the day the Chalisa is most often taken up. Households that keep a practice read it every morning after the bath, before anything else. During Sawan, the Mondays of the month get a fuller reading, often with water or milk offered at the Shivling. Pradosh, the twilight on the thirteenth day of each fortnight, and Mahashivratri are the other times families give it special weight.
If your day does not allow a morning reading, the evening is accepted. What matters is picking an hour and repeating it.
How is the Shiv Chalisa read?
Bathe, light a diya, and sit facing east or north. Begin with a short prayer to Ganesh, since he is invoked first in every puja, then read the forty verses straight through at a calm pace. Aloud or in a low voice are both fine. Close with a Shiv aarti if you keep one. There are no gender or age rules, and no initiation is needed.
Offering a few bel leaves or a small lota of water at the Shivling or Shiv murti is a simple addition on Mondays. The belpatra rules are worth reading before you pluck any.
What is the Shiv Chalisa read for?
Tradition holds that Mahadev is the one a household turns to for stillness and the strength to hold it. Families read the Chalisa for peace at home, for steadiness in a difficult period, and for protection of the household. Many keep it as the Monday practice alongside a simple vrat, and it is a natural companion to the Sawan Somvar routine. The forty verses take only a few minutes, which is a large part of why the practice lasts in busy households.
How do you count a fixed number of readings?
If you take a sankalp to read the Chalisa a set number of times, such as eleven, twenty one or one hundred and eight, keep the count with a counter instead of in your head. The Shiv Chalisa and Japa Counter Combo pairs a wooden Shiv Chalisa with a digital finger counter for this reason. There is no mala and no idol in that set. The Chalisa is read, the counter is pressed once per reading, and the words and the number are both covered.
How is a wooden Shiv Chalisa kept in the mandir?
Keep it on a clean cloth or a small shelf near the Shiv murti or Shivling, at a level above the floor. Many households wrap it in a red or white cloth between readings. Do not keep other items on top of it, and keep it away from shoes and from the kitchen side of the home.
For the wood, use a soft dry cloth. Avoid water and cleaning liquids, keep it clear of the diya flame, and store it away from damp walls. Each piece is finished from wood, so grain and tone vary slightly.
What if a Monday is missed?
Pick it up the next day, or on the next Monday. A missed day is not a fault in this practice, and nobody needs to repeat it. Households who read daily simply continue. Those who keep only the Monday reading carry on the following week, and many give the Sawan Mondays a little extra time.
Can all three Chalisas be kept together?
Yes. The Powerful Chalisa Combo (Set of 3) holds the Hanuman, Shiv and Durga Chalisa, so the mandir has a text for Tuesday, Monday and the Devi's days. If you are choosing only one, start with the deity your family already worships.
