The short answer

The peace lily is kept in the north-east or north, in the study or at the desk where one prepares for exams. Vastu practice reads the white spathe as sattvic and gives the plant to Saraswati and Shukra, with Friday as its day. No shastra names it, so this is a modern vastu reading. It likes shade, even moisture and an occasional wipe of its leaves.

Is the peace lily in the shastras?

No, and it is better to say so plainly. The peace lily is not an Indian plant and it entered Indian homes in the last century. What it has is a vastu reading, made by practitioners from the plant itself. The white spathe is sattvic, white is Saraswati's colour, and the plant is therefore given to Saraswati and to Shukra, whose day is Friday. In the shop it carries its Hindi name, Shanti Lily.

Take it as what it is, a modern assignment applied consistently, and it serves well as a calm plant for a study corner. The Peace Lily is sold potted.

Which direction suits a peace lily?

The north-east is the first choice, since it is the zone tradition keeps for study, learning and calm. North is a good second. A desk by a north or east window works well for a student. Keep it out of direct afternoon sun and away from a bathroom or a cluttered corner.

Which room is best?

The study, a desk corner or a quiet hall. Students and exam families keep it near the desk during the exam months, and Saraswati Puja is another time it is brought to the study. For a new flat, a north-east corner of the living room works too.

Which rashi is it for?

Since Shukra is its graha, Tula jatak are pointed to it, and Vrishabh also share Shukra. Our Pisces Sacred Peace Lily Combo pairs the plant with a bracelet for a household that wants the plant as a gift. The god, planet and rashi guide lists the other pairings.

How do you care for a peace lily?

It is a shade-tolerant plant with glossy dark green leaves. Keep it in bright indirect light, away from harsh sun, which scorches the leaves. Water when the top of the soil feels dry. A peace lily droops clearly when thirsty and perks up within hours of a drink, so it tells you when to water. Do not leave it sitting in water. Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth every few weeks and feed lightly in the growing months.

Will it flower?

The white spathe comes in its own season, so the plant may arrive in leaf only. Bright indirect light, regular feeding and a snug pot help it bloom. If it does not flower for a few months, it is usually a light issue and the leaves remain handsome in the meantime.

Is it safe around pets and children?

Peace lily is toxic if chewed, and can irritate the mouth and stomach of a pet or a child. Keep it on a high shelf or desk, out of reach.

Where should it not be kept?

Keep it away from a hot window, from direct afternoon sun and from an air conditioner vent. Avoid a dark corner as well. Vastu also keeps a bathroom and a store room from being used for decorative plants, so a living space is the better home.

What occasions is it kept or gifted for?

Exam time, Saraswati Puja, a new home and an anniversary are the occasions households mention. A student can keep one on the desk through the exam months. It is a quiet, clean looking plant, which is why it is a popular gift for a new flat.

What are the common problems?

Brown leaf tips usually mean dry air or tap water with a lot of salts, so use water that has stood overnight. Yellow leaves mean overwatering. If the plant is root bound, with roots pushing out of the pot, move it up one size in spring.

As tradition records it

Associations shown on this page are classical and devotional. The tradition works, and it has been kept by generations.
